Space Apps Challenge 2017

Beach Smart is an application that can be used by the everyday beach goers to check and plan their perfect beach holiday or expedition. This app uses current Earth Observation equipment and satellites to gather the required data to show and predict what that chosen beach has. The app covers many areas of preferences, such as: UV intensity, the weather, depth of the sea, temperature of the sea, water quality, wind direction and speed, ocean conditions, and tide times. The user can pick a particular activity, such as: snorkelling, surfing, kayaking, etc. With all these preferences chosen, the area of interest, for example, Angola; the app will show the best beach for the user cutting down disappointment in the beach. This app will find the best beach for what the user wants to do.

The data has the benefit of giving immediate results but also can show predicted information. This predicted information is calculated from the satellite data and algorithms in the app. By using the power of crowd-sourcing, feedback from the user s can be used for verification and ratings of their chosen beach. Revenue can be made through partnerships with insurance companies and advertisements. This can also have an educational benefit giving students more information about Earth Observation and related science topics.

A good example is a couple who has explored most of the popular beach destinations worldwide, who are now looking for a new and exciting beach to discover. By using this app they can pick an area in the world, fine tune their preferences and the app will give them the best beach to discover in their chosen area.
