When landslides hit
Design an easy-to- use tool to enable the public to discover and understand ground-slip
data and to submit their user observations to emergency managers.
This tool will:
-Use data from landslides all over the world
-Recognize features of disasters and other events, and observe similar characteristics
in other locations
-Use information on weather and soil and be able to detect heavy rains in places of
risk, as well as warn about a possibility of a landslide
-Simple, enabling people to have access to knowledge readily available, in addition to
collaborating with the environment of on-the- spot occurrences
-Be able to present possible proposals that make it difficult for land sliding to occur,
aiming at the safety of people living in risky conditions due to a lack of resources
Society constantly faces problems with landslides, badly planned cities with
urbanization composed of structural works that are not compatible with the natural
characteristics and the cities can still not keep up with socioeconomic transformations.
People of low income are forced to live in places of risk due to lack of resources.
Knowing that it seems unviable for these people to move to a better place and out of
harms way, we have developed an App that makes it possible to bring more safety not
only to these people, but to every place where risks are detected based on geological
and climatological data that are analyzed by the tool, allowing people to be alerted to
the risk of landslides.
The tool will contain data from all the landslides that have occurred, which will help to
discover other similar risk locations based on the climate. It will be possible to define
when heavy rains will occur that may cause great chances of collapses. In addition to
an early warning, the tool will offer the user an easy understanding and proximity with
complementary information, which can also report on events. Users will also be able to
send photos in order to help other users. The tool will also have options that can
prevent disasters or at least somehow increase personal safety thus reducing the
chances of disasters that even with safety measures occur. The user will have a risk
alert. For people who will continue living in these risky areas this would be a step
forward, making it possible to decrease the number of deaths and catastrophes.
Finally, through our database with the various quantity of information acquired and
increased by the users themselves, it will be possible to better prepare people when
landslides hit.
